Instructions for Newsgatherers

Overview:

The task is to collect data such as:

  • Company annual reports
  • Company interim reports
  • Other company documents (eg: prospectus, listing particulars or presentation to analysts).
  • Third party research reports covering the target company News articles & press releases
  • Links to WWW sites relevant to the target company.

In some cases we will target new companies.In these cases it may have no news or data and will need to build up an inventory of news and data from scratch.In other cases we may be targeting companies which have already be the subject of frequent reviews.In this case we may only need a few months or just a few weeks of incremental news and data.

Competition  & Industry Structure This topic relates to all the occurrences and trends having a bearing on the industry structure. In  particular, look for articles relating to factors affecting a company’s position with respect to its competitors,   suppliers and customers. 
  • Changes in market share 
  • Vertical or horizontal integration. 
  • Conclusion, amendment or terrmination          of particularly significant contractual relationships.  
  • Major labour disputes or disputes with  major contractors or suppliers.

  • News relating to the expansion of operations of a company into other  markets and how the company is  gaining access to these markets. 
  • Organic expansion in to new countries by setting up new plants.  
  • Expansion into new markets by buying  into companies.

  •  News regarding government regulation should be included if they have a bearing on industry structure. 
  • Legal disputes of particular significance.  
  • Antitrust regulation  
  • Licensing issues (eg auction or issue  of telecoms licenses)

Mergers & Acquisitions Articles containing information about  mergers and acquisitions (and disposals) should be included. If a company has acquired a large number of companies, then it may be useful to  find an article summarising the 
company’s acquisitions rather than select an article for each acquisition.		 x    x x x
Capital Raising &
 Investment		 News concerning company plans to raise capital
  •  Borrowing of a significant amount of funds. 
  • Public or private sale of additional  shares (or share buy-backs). 
  • Selling existing company assets.  
  • Details on how the capital is to be invested. 
  • Obtaining new facilities or expanding existing facilities. 
  • Buying a stake in a new company or joint venture. 
  • Repayment of debt.
